S&S,
Thanks for the update show. We are all wondering what your “on the ground” experiences are and I'm glad you are OK.
Around the rest of the country (like here in Michigan) the situation is also getting huge coverage - so there are a lot of people thinking about the situation.
I'm glad you're using the PodCacher media channels to tell us your views on what’s going on, it doesn’t' matter if it's not about caching for now. Caching can wait until the disaster is over.
It does make me think though, of a lot of melted lok-n-loks and about what the contents of ammo cans look like after being exposed to 700 degree heat...
Stay safe,

bumanfam Mom's mom and sister just called from San Diego. Thought they're apparently safe at this time, they've decided to grab the kids and get out of Dodge. Since school is out for a while and work is on hold and things are generally insane, they're going to drive to see us!

Glad to hear that your safe!!
But on a Caching note...
I was thinking, how is this going to affect caching in California?
Im sure that there are caches that are being consumed...

Have you had any caches in the area of the fires?

Campfire smoke is OK, BUT a Fires Smell is one of the most distinct smells..

(what a way to Celebrate your Anniversary! Congrats!)

SakiMommy and I have you in our thoughts and prayers..

Thanks for the update...

Wow! We just listened to the show. Thanks for the update. You two are a couple of great reporters. Much better than the reports we are getting on the news here on the other coast. I hate to say it but it has been raining here all day, I just wish we could send it your way to clear up those fires. Well, our prayers and well wishes are still with all those involved. Take care.

Yep, we would *gladly* take that rain off your hands. It's a bit like living in an ashtray 'round here. Mad Confused Mad

The fire was 1 1/2 miles from my place last night. Now we have the smoke coming from the two fires in Camp Pendleton. So we have smoke on both sides of us now.

Here is the view from my car today.

Here is the view from Oakley headquaters in Foothill Ranch from yesterday.

I remember flying into LA about 4 years ago during the fire season and as far as the eye could see to the north and south it was red on the ridges.

You are in our thoughts a prayers.

All the best, dad2jnk

Recognize the great photo of the Oakley parking lot. A buddy of mine, who I introduced to geocaching, flew us over there to check out their heliport pad that is nearby in an Robison two seat helo a few years back.

I am sure there are many caches exposed to the fire. Saw first hand what happens to tupperware and an ammo can when subjected to the fire in the anaheim hills area. Everything melts inside the ammo can and you are lucky if there is still enough left of the log book to sign. Perhaps GS is working on a script that generates a NEEDS MAINTENANCE log for all cache hides in the fire zones based on the latest maps that show the extent of fire damage?

On a more serious note... Besides Sandy's brother's family, does anyone know another SoCal geocacher who has been forced to evacuate or sustained property damage (not including cache hides)?

On to listening to the show...

We've been getting lots of coverage here, but your coverage is much better. I hope that everything is okay. The Google Maps mashup shows that the University is San Marcos is burned. I'm not sure if that's true, but I also heard that it is now 100% contained around you. Which is true?

Cal State San Marcos did not burn, but it was near one of the smaller fires in Coronado Hills (San Marcos). That fire is 100% contained, but none of the other much larger fires are contained yet.

The Google Maps mashup by KPBS (the link from the PodCacher homepage) shows Sonny's park as in the burned area, though it's just on the edge.
