FTP! Looking forward to the new show. I just watched that SVU video and I was very disturbed by its portrayal of geocachers. See my post in Show 236 for more of my comments.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was chosen as one of the Milestone winners. Leave it to Sonny to play a trick on us with the phone call right during the first dice roll. Congrats to everyone else that won. I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun reading all the log entries this week.

Before anyone else says it. Yes, Sandy and I both blew it and said SUV instead of SVU. We realized after recording and before editing. Grr. _________________ Have you found it yet? |

Thanks for reading my comment on the show! I'm always excited to get to contribute something.
However... to play devil's advocate... While I agree with the general sentiment of your editorial about SVU, you have to consider that the show is supposed to be sensationalistic, and does not have a good track record of being kind to the subcultures it portrays. You could swap out geocacher for comic book collector, video game player, D&D gamer, sci-fi lover, coin collector, stamp collector, little league coach, frat or sorority member, gymnast... just about anything and find an SVU episode that would offend the members of that subculture in some way. Here's a quote from an article in the New York Post that illustrates how ubiquitous this attitude is: "Put the words "Law & Order: SVU" and "gym teacher" in the same sentence and your first thought is likely to be: "This can't end well."
There is an episode where a comic book collector (who lives in his mother's basement naturally) is smothered under the weight of his own collection by a fellow collector. A little league coach that killed a member of the opposing team to insure his team's victory. Video gamers that stalk each other in cyberspace. No one from outside of the very vanilla mainstream gets by an appearance on that show without getting dinged a bit. Just be glad that the cachers were a tangential part of the story and not the actual killers.
This is not the first time that L&O has tackled geocaching, by the way. They did an episode on L&O: Criminal Intent (the one with Vincent D'Onofrio) back in 2005. Here is the synopsis of that episode:
Law & Order: Criminal Intent
Aired May 8, 2005
STREET SHOOTINGS RAISE PUBLIC OUTCRY AS POLICE PROBE FEMALE STALKER -- AND HIGH-TECH TREASURE HUNT GAME -- After a young actor Mike, (guest star Jeffrey Hephner) is wounded and his fiancee is shot dead on the street, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) are pointed towards the surviving victim's former girlfriend, who is known to have stalked him. The key, however, might turn on their probe of "geocaching," a high-tech treasure-hunt game that could yield vital clues. As the media and public mourn the man's tragic loss, the police want to take another look at some of his acting buddies, especially one who never lets go of his Palm Pilot. Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B. Vance also star.
I remember that one getting pans from cachers too because the cache was buried in Central Park and required shovels to get at.
As for the incorrect portrayal of the cache listing... I'm sure there are legal issues to using a real website. Plus, would a realistic portrayal of tracking down a cache listing have been at ALL interesting to the general viewer? There are (I'm guessing) 300 caches on Manhattan alone... logging in to GC.com to determine which one it actually is, and by a novice user of the site? That would have taken hours of investigation right there! _________________ My Blog!

I'm with CoA on this I think... I'm not happy that geocaching got profiled, but given that it did, I think we came out much better than we could have. When they did the show implying that all the people who play Second Life are borderline pedophiles, I didn't start pounding my shoe on the table. I just sat back and enjoyed the show. |

You guys make some good points, but if I had my choice, I'd rather have us (geocachers) portrayed as we really are:
Superheroes in our modern world!!! (without the Spandex though ...)
Maybe not fight crime, but we're ready to clean up a local park, help wayward lost people in the back-country and saving the world from boredom one cache at a time!

I think that geocachers take themselves, their hobby, and their public protrayal too seriously sometimes.
Why can't we just get out and have fun and quit worrying about what other people think. _________________ If you ain't first, you're last!!

It was cool to learn that I'd won one of the 250 achievement coins while listening the show on the way home today - especially since I already knew that TheBadCop had won one (via Twitter).
It was even more cool to one of three Maryland cacher to be referenced in the episode, along with WoodenRadio and *dad gad*. MGS cachers rock!
All around show! Thanks and happy trails! _________________ Dave - DudleyGrunt

Too seriously??? OK, next time I see AWEMM, PACHOLIK, or GEBSKAB on an FTF hunt in SoCal, am going to SLAM them against a wall if they try to steal MY FTF!
The show writers could have played up the access to the difficultly placed cache and make those two knuckleheads look cool by repeling down, or put one in a Hazardous Material Suit, or put NVGs on one guy and have him cry out in pain when the other idiot appears and puts his head lamp on him, etc. The show writers lack imagination and geo-experience ... geocaching can be cool, if they would have let it be, which would have helped the publicity cause. Don't think a CITO would have helped them boost ratings either ... is it possible to hide a body under a lamp post skirt? That would do it!
While we can lament that at least Law and Order tried, they are 0 for 2 by my count.
Cache on and often!
PS When Jeremy talked about that Mt. LeConte hiking trail smelling like Christmas, was it before or after he stepped in the bear scat?
Just kidding - good story Jeremy. Had another cacher on a power run do something similar (stepped on a doggy land mine) and then brought it (and the smell) back to MY car ... while that must happen to everyone at least once, the driver was NOT a happy geocacher! |

Forget L&O, caching was referenced on last week's Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I didn't see it, but apparently, the family was given some GPS units, did some non-caching activities, and then maybe did one cache or at least talked about caching.
You can watch Season 7 Episode 1 (Huber Family) at Hulu.com.
More info on the episode is HERE. _________________ Dave - DudleyGrunt

i'm with CoA- you have to look at the source. the portrayal of gc'ers was so far off the mark that they looked much more like "rogue" cachers. if someone decided to find out about geocaching after they saw l&o suv (ha!) they might be disappointed to find out just how wholesome the game is! i'm no prude but i have to say the website guy's handle was offensive more because it was unoriginal, uninspiring and unrealistic!
here is some flattery for s3- the last several shows have been totally awesome!! between the caching stories from listeners, rants/ raves/ contests/ gadget news and gc news/ new bumper music, the show feels refreshed and cutting edge!! keep up the good work!
btw- any preggo cachers out there? just wonderin' . . . . |
