Just starting to listen, as I begin my work day. Glad to see that BITcaching will be one of the topics and was the pic for the show (on the iPod). _________________ Dave

Another great show!
Challenge caches and I haven't gotten off to a great start. As it is right now, I doubt I'll play that part of the game much.
Yall are right - GC couldn't win at all with Challenge caches. No matter what they did, including nothing at all, was going to have someone upset. The compromise they have come up with is like most compromises - everyone loses something and walks away not completely happy. I will give them credit for trying to do something. Trying and failing (and I'm not saying this is a failure yet) is better than not trying at all.
I can't say I was thrilled when the new cache hosting sites popped up. Sure, competition is nice for some things, but I don't think hosting caches is one of them. It can lead to multiple caches in one spot or area. I have seen twice where a geocache and a letterbox are at the same tree. And now we have a hosting site discouraging the listing of one cache on multiple sites? I had thought of doing that to all of my caches just keep others from placing another in the same area. I'm rather discouraged by this.
Argh. It's Monday..... |

EWB - I'm not sure if "discourage" is the right word or not for OpenCachingUS' stance on crosslisting. It implies a more active effort, than I think we make. We definitely allow it, but let folks know that we'd rather have new, unique caches. If you'd like to cross list your caches on OCUS, you're free to do so.
However, I'll also let you know that at OCUS, we do check for known, nearby caches. We have quick links to check GC.com, TerraCaching and Navicache, and GSPgames. Of course, we can't check unlisted final coords. I'm working on getting the developer folks to add Garmin's site, thought I think most are also listed on GC.com, there are obviously caches unique to Garmin.
We attempt to have a 300' separation, but are flexible if a lower distance would still provide allow for a clear delineation between the two (or more) caches. I'm generally VERY hesitant to allow anything below 100'.
Yours is one reason for crosslisting that I'd not previously thought of.
I do know that some people on another similarly named site, had been discussing actively placing caches near those on gc.com to purposely get folks to accidentally find theirs and then (in theory) join their site. I would definitely not think this would be a good idea and don't know how wide-spread that has ended up being over there. _________________ Dave

Thanks for putting out a plug for the Challenge caches on GC.com. Over the weekend my challenge saw a lot of activity and I was able to complete two other challenges.
Additionally, thanks for your efforts to spread the news about BITCaching and Opencaching.us.
You guys are awesome!
Keep on Cachin'

Im surprised no one has used (or maybe they have) the Challenges to "promote" their lonely caches that havent been found in a while and posted a challenge near some of theirs to attract attention and activity in that area.
Im not condoning this but I did think about this as a potential issue when challenges were announced. _________________ salsaguy |
