YES, if I find a cache but can not get to the log, I claim it as found if it appears I was unable to get to the log due to a malfunction of the cache.
If a red herring cache is put out, then it should be stated somewhere that it is a red herring or I would claim credit. I have found a cache . . . or thought I had and then opened up the container only to find a note stating "this is not the cache, keep looking"
Any puzzle cache in which I find the cache but can not retrieve the log, I do not count as a find. The only time I can think of that is the time the electric cache actually did not function properly. After posting my DNF and explaining all that I did, the CO quickly went out and repaired the cache and posted a note so the next time I went to find it, I quickly "solved" the puzzle and was able to get the log. (Here's a video of when I went back and it was working properly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2-kBEXzsAM ). |

the cedar tree decorating in austin has been going on for awhile- there used to be a lot at mopac/ loop 360 but txdot raised a big stink about it because the trees were decorated in the txdot right-of-way and could potentially distract drivers- what a bunch of grinches! they trees always make me smile when i see them. there have been a few decorated cedar trees in my neighborhood. at least this spreading of holiday cheer makes cedar trees good for something! |

Not to be a grinch, but don't Christmas caches violate the guidelines?
Geocache Permanence: Geocaches are placed for the long term. Geocachers will expect your cache to remain in place for a realistic and extended period of time. Therefore, caches that have the goal to move ("traveling caches"), or temporary caches (caches hidden for less than 3 months or for events) will not be published.

Can't get the cache open.... I thought this was going to be an easy answer.
For a Puzzle - Nope, because there may be more to it.
For a Multi - Nope, because there may be another stage. Even if I'm on the 3rd find of a 3 stage multi I won't do it because someone might hide one and not count the unitial find as stage 1.
For a Virtual - OK, this may seem silly, but is it? Sure, no log to find. But what if what the owner wanted you to see was in a locked building? So what if you could answer the questions, you didn't see what you were supposed to see.
For a Traditional - I have logged one I couldn't get oipen, but that was after a call to the owner. I have been to a couple of traditionals where there where red herring caches. They were totally obvious, but what if you come across a cache where there are red herrings that aren't obvious? If it were a local cache or I could get in touch with the owner, or if I were with someone who had previously logged this, I would log it. But if not, hmmmm. I'm thinking most likely I would, but I'm not sure. I think what I read on the cache page, the logs, and the last time the owner has checked in would sway my decision. |

Maybe, if they are not permanent (at least to last 3 months) they shoult not get published. _________________ ======
