Replacement Caches
I'll replace some missing containers for a few local cachers only if one of the following requirements is met:
1. I've found the cache and knew what it was.
2. It's part of a trail and all the containers are the same and something like a tie wrap on a branch shows me where it was.
3. I can get the CO on the phone.
I replaced one once for a local cacher I had not met because it was obvious from the container shaped hole in the ground where the cache had been. It didn't meet the above qualifications so I wouldn't do it today if the opportunity came again.
I won't replace caches out of my area, and especially for cachers I don't know.
I was burned once - had a log deleted by a CO - who said I had found a replacement container. Well gee, you waited until months after I had found it, you had Needs Maintenance logs for a while. If you're going to be that particular about what is found then maintain your cache.
I learned something else from that last cache that I apply to my county runs. Because I may run into trouble with a CO or their hides, when we do our runs we try to find a minimum now of two caches by two different COs (four caches minimum) in each county. That should take care of the problem above as well as give a back up if we can't figure out one of the CO's hides.
Congrats on 400(plus) shows. Looking forward to #500! |

My rules for replacing caches.
1.) I've found the cache container and it's broken/damaged in some fashion and needs replaced.
2.) I have communicated with the cache owner (usually by sending pic's indicating where I thought the cache was.) This includes when I see string/tie straps/etc. And the owner confirmed that it had been muggled.
Not too long ago, I found the original container on a cache GCMERC that was replaced in 2005 time frame by the original cache owner that couldn't even find his own container. The log sheet had two sigs in 2007 and one in 2008 (all the other 10 were signed in 2005) This is a cache that has 127 finds on it right now.
I checked the log page because I thought it was weird that the log sigs were so old, and I had looked at the photo of a previous finder and saw a different container than what I was holding. So I kept up my search and I found the replacement container 2' away from the original.
Admittedly the new container is much easier to spot in it's location. I replace both containers (there's been 4 DNF's since then, but I DNF'd it the first time I looked for it - definitely a tough one to find, even with two containers hidden.) Now that I looked at it and seen the recent DNF's I think I might just stop by and confirm they're still there.
So just because you can't find it, it definitely doesn't mean it's not there. Sometimes even owners can't find it and end up putting out replacement caches that are right there only 2' away. Because we all know what it makes us when we assume _________________ I'd rather be caching! |

Might be a good idea for cache owners to take pictures of where they hide their caches so they can go back and find them easier. I'm glad all of mine are pretty simple. |
